Stargazing Live 2012 - Free Open Evenings

In support of the BBC's Stargazing Live programmes that will be aired on the evenings of the 16th, 17th and 18th of January 2012, the Chesterfield Astronomical Society is pleased to announce three open evenings running a day behind the programmes. The observatory will be open to the public on the 17th, 18th and 19th of January from 8 o'clock onwards. The evenings will include talks about astronomy and tours of the observatory. Weather permitting, visitors will get the opportunity to view the night skies using some of the society's telescopes including the huge one and a half ton telescope permanently housed in the main dome. Entry is free but all donations - no matter how small - will be gratefully received to help maintain the facilities and to contribute to running costs.

There is a small carpark at the front of the observatory but if there are no spaces available, please park considerately because Hastings Close is a residential road.

When We Are Open

We are open every Friday from 20:00 onward. The observatory usually closes when the last member leaves which will depend upon the weather conditions, what is visible and personal commitments.

Non-members are welcome to come and have a look around before you decide if you would like to join or not.

Anyone can become a member of the society and we provide reduced rate membership for the young and for senior citizens.

Group Visits

Group visits (within or outside the normal open hours) are usually available, for more information please click here to send an email to the events officer or call the Observatory Helpline on 0792 33 55 786.
