This is a series of photos showing the observatory being built in the late 1950’s, some of the completed observatory including some shots of Horace Barnett who, with friends family, built the telescope. It was a fantastic achievement and even today remains one of the largest amateur telescopes in the country.

The gallery has been enlarged recently to include some images from the nineteen sixties and seventies of the buildings, telescopes and people from the early days of the society.

We’re very proud to look after this piece of Chesterfield’s heritage and will be forever grateful to Horace and everyone who was involved in building it.
