Open Evening Saturday 1st April
Our open evening did not go without a hitch so I’ll get this out of the way to start with! Sadly, the Derbyshire Times advertised it in an article as being on Friday instead of Saturday. D’oh! As a consequence, a few of us went to the observatory early on Friday to make sure any visitors who turned up could be met and apologised to. Fortunately, only two people attended and after a brief chat about the main scope in the dome they left and seemed not to be unhappy. The Derbyshire Times have always given us a great deal of support and they contacted us as soon as they realised their error, apologising profusely and assuring us it wouldn’t happen again. I have no doubt they will do us proud next time we ask for their help.
Perhaps this error had an effect because numbers were down a little on the Saturday. We made £255.12 in total from the event for which we are very grateful. As always, there are many people to thank – particularly Marilyn for her excellent organisational skills and the members who gave up their time to help out. Rich and Dave did a sterling job as usual in the refreshments tent and Rich’s burgers went down very well!
The theme of the evening was comets and meteors and we had a number of telescopes out searching the unusually clear skies along with a radioscope and live data feed from two radioscopes in Hykeham observatory. Thanks to John Bardwell and Will Carr for manning this during the evening.
Sadly, comet 41P could not be found as is so often the case with these objects. Better luck next time!
Marilyn’s addition of a kiddies’ corner with puzzles and colouring pictures went down really well.
In the dome, Sue and Peter did the usual excellent job with the main scope.
All in all, despite the low numbers, the evening seemed a success. I had a regular stream of people coming in to the lecture room for the talk and there was a constant buzz of activity outside.
Robert Bawcombe was our official photographer during the event and a selection of his photos are in the galleries below.
Thanks again to all members who helped out. We had fabulous support from you all and without your continued help with these events we would not be able to put them on.
